Self-tapping screws are tools used to drill and fasten different materials, such as wood, plastic, or thin metal sheets, together securely. They can be used with a regular screwdriver, electric drill, or wrench without the need for a nut to hold the screw in place. The key features of self-tapping screws are sharp, uniform threads and a pointed tip, which allow them to easily and quickly penetrate materials. Nowadays, self-tapping screws come in various types, including different materials, screw head designs, thread types, tip shapes, and thread lengths. Each type has unique characteristics, so it is essential to choose the appropriate self-tapping screw for the job to ensure stable and strong fastening.
Types of Self Tapping Screws and Their Uses
1.) Wood screws (Self Tapping Screws)
Primarily used for woodwork. Although they can be used on metal, it is less common as drill-point self-tapping screws are now widely available.
2.) Drill-point self-tapping screws
Used primarily for metalwork.
3.) Black self-tapping screws (Drywall Screws)
Used for installing drywall or ceilings. There are also types with wings or specialized threads, or both wings and specialized threads, that are used with plastic anchors to improve fastening strength.
