Plastics are very popular material to shape the products. It is very easy to handle, strong enough for most of the application and so on. When it comes to the advantages of plastic as a material, we cannot list them all. However, one needs to decide what plastic to be used for certain kind of processing. Processing has variety of speed and stress. One example of low stress processing would be rotary molding. The plastic melt was put it in the mold and they rotate the mold to get certain shape. On the other hand, high stress processing can be to use blow molding or injection molding technology to give certain shape to the products. Every process is different and so are the stress and/or shear rates, the process gives to plastics.
Then we need to consider that a plastic is a polymer and shows non-linear behavior. That means one cannot predict how that plastic behaves in the practical processing if they measure its characteristics in different stress or speed.
When it comes to the measurements of the material characteristics, rotational rheometer, melt flow indexer (MFI) and capillary rheometer are popular way of doing so.
Rotational rheometer can measure its characteristics as long as the molten material stays in the geometry. So, rotational speed and/or applied stress is limited to slow processes. Melt flow indexer (MFI) measures weight of the material coming through the die when applied approx. 10kgs or so of load to the materials. This means MFI measures the characteristics of low stress processes. Capillary Rheometry is the measurement that can characterize the process of extrusion, blow molding and injection molding process. Covering the shear rate range of the actual process is highly recommended, and correction of Bagley and Rabinowitcsh is necessary to obtain true shear viscosity. It, also, gives viscosity graph to determine overall behavior of materials. So, it becomes a crucial basic data for a CAE.
