Drilling machines can be intimidating, but if used correctly, they can process materials quickly. This is especially important when processing copper which has a sticky texture.

The 118° refers to the tip angle of the drill bit. Generally, high-speed steel drills used in drilling machines are designed with a 118° angle for processing.

The smaller the tip angle, the less vertical resistance there is in the drilling machine. In extreme cases, holes can be drilled at sharper angles, like 90°.

While smaller tip angles reduce the contact area, they also concentrate more force on a single point, making the drill bit more prone to chipping. Additionally, the chips produced become thinner and longer, which can cause clogging.

On the other hand, if the angle is more than 120°, the contact area between the drill bit and the workpiece increases, causing greater resistance. This requires more force. However, the chips become shorter and more stable, making it an effective solution in powerful machining processes, where it can improve surface finish and allow for higher rotation speeds.
