[Difference between positive and negative tips]
A tip with a clearance angle is called "positive", while a tip without a clearance angle is called "negative".

In terms of angles, a negative tip has a clearance angle of 0°, while a positive tip has a clearance angle of about 11°.

When cutting the internal diameter, a specified clearance angle is required for the bit, so a negative tip will not fit unless it has a specific diameter, such as φ40.

As a result, positive tips are the most common choice for internal diameter bits.There are no constraints on exterior diameter bits, so negative tips can be utilized; however, the mounting angle and rake are usually negative, resulting in significant cutting resistance.

Positive tips are useful for reducing cutting resistance because they maintain a clearance angle on the cutting edge even when set horizontally, and grooves in the tip allow for a positive scooping angle.

The cutting edge strength is somewhat lower than that of negative tips, making it impractical for rough processing but great for mild cutting and polishing.

In terms of tip usage, negative tips are better suited for heavy cutting and positive tips for finishing.
By the way, negative tips can be used on both sides, whilst positive tips can only be used on one.
